This week I want to talk about some common words that have spread through American English culture, starting from the year 2010 till today. Obviously new words continue to be made year after year, and even as I write this, people are coming up with new interesting words.

By learning these, you will impress the English speaker that you talk with. Most important is knowing not only the words, but also how to use them in a sentence and at the right time.

1) Shady

This is the first word I want to talk about. The definition of "shady" or "throwing shade" is to insult someone (only with close friends) in a sly way. This word is used always in a joking way when your friends start to make fun of you or crack jokes on you.

Example:

A: Hey man do you want to go to lunch with me?

B: No, I don’t want to.

A: Why not?

B: Because you’re not cool enough to go with me.

A: Wow...you’re shady!

A:你妹呀!

This word has surprisingly lasted a lot longer than I expected it to last. The word turnt or “turnt up” can be used when you are trying to make an event, meeting, party and or sports competition much more exciting.

Turnt is the two words "turn it" and if you add an "up" at the end of those words, you get "turn it up." This phrase directly comes from listening to music. A person may want the music to be played louder so that you can get more feeling and excitement.

"Turnt"其實是"turn it"這兩個單詞的組合,如果你再在詞尾加一個"up"的話,就是"turn it up"。

Example 1:

A: Bro, we are losing this basketball game.

B: Ok bro, let’s get turnt then!

Example 2:

A: Hey man this dance party has no one dancing.

B: Alright man, let’s get turnt!

3) Hashtag#

The last word that I want to introduce to my fellow listeners is hashtag (#). The word is actually said by using the pound or number sign on the phone. It has been around for a long time and is a little older than the other words. This word is commonly used to connect similar topics together. It is also commonly used on one of America’s famous social network called twitter. This word is the most fun when used well. Normally when you are writing hashtags, you should keep all the words together with no space.

Example:

A: I really don’t want to go school on Monday.

B: Yeah bro, tell me about it…#mundanemondays#beginningoftheweek#justcameoffafunweekend

That’s all for today, I see you next time!
